Willard Hill is a respected wildlife enthusiast and former employee of the PGC. Here is an interesting read on winter game feeding.

Good article. As soon as I saw Roxane Palones name there I thought..Here we go...Shes the goof that was on the PGC board that was advocating ATLATL season which is a form of spear hunting. She said it was to get more people interested in hunting. After some research I found there are about 400 people in the whole country that do this and maybe 30 in Pennsylvania.WOOOO!!! That sure would of put some people in the woods.

Where they get some of these people they put on that board is beyond me.Some of the stuff these yahoos come up with for the so called good of the states animals is ridiculous. Its bad enough some people think a crossbow can shot as far as a .270 let alone flinging a stick at a deer with the accuracy of a lawn dart.Every time Roxane Palone opened her mouth was just like looking at the south end of a cow to me..BS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to the feeding.Back in 2003 it was a very bad winter.I was feeding (and this is no lie) 50 deer. The snow was deep and there was a heavy crust on top.All the deer could do was come down and feed and the would head up behind my house and bed under the hemlocks. When the heard me they would file down their paths even as I was throwing the feed out.I had to put it in different places because of all the fighting they would do.This went on for about a month and a half.

After the weather got better and the deer went for greener pastures I walked the hill behind the house and found 1 dead deer.I think it slipped on the ice and broke its back. But that made me a firm believer in winter feeding.I had heard the horror storys about winter feeding but after seeing what was going on behind my house that winter I concluded that if you can help the critters in any way the better for them.

Maybe we should feed the deer what we eat ever week.... I hate to give up any of our treats.
